3rd Meeting with Supervisor

Date Nov 24, 2010
Time 16.50 - 17.50

Key points

- feedback on EEDD6002 presentation (the focus is now on "Understanding Student Engagement at CC")

i) Justifications:
a) CC @ HK culturally unique (totally different from the US system);
b) Practical improvement (as CC is quite new in HK, how can it be improved
down the road)

ii) Approach:

- mixed approach, instead of case study, probably conducting a quantative
research to prove how unique student egmt at LUCC is.
- need to identify dependable and independable variables

- Why EdD: to improve our sector
- Things to consider:

a) limit the group of my students, e.g. engaged vs. non-engaged students;
b) benchmarks (how to measure?)
c) why they are not engaged, e.g. single parents

Actions

1. Dig out the supervisor of Mr Lau Wai-wah, an EdD graduate, on his thesis entitled "A narrative inquiry into the formation, development and challenges of secondary technical
education in Hong Kong, 1945-2008".

Post-mtg note: Dr Flora Kan - after talking to her, I have to know what a narrative inquiry is. Lau traces technical edu back to the Second World War. This methodology can be employed as long as I have a convincing historical context, i.e. showing a causal relationship by means of historical context.

2. Send GP the PDF files of relevant journal articles and the following sites:

a) http://www.achievingthedream.org/CAMPUSSTRATEGIES/OVERVIEW/default.tp

b) http://www.ccsse.org/portal/

c) http://www.whitehouse.gov/communitycollege

3. draft lit review and submit to GP by 28 Dec 2010 for review

Due date: mid-Jan 2010
